Reflections from Eau Claire - Why this town felt like home

The Nine Devines in Eau Claire

After a false start – to borrow a football analogy – thanks to the COVID virus that ran through the Husain house, the Nine Devines was able to make its debut in the Chippewa Valley on February 15th. The scene was the Local Store in Eau Claire, a venue where the book has been described as “flying off the shelf.”

Adventures in Self Publishing

In preparation for the creation of a publishing company to bring The Nine Devines of Chippewa Falls into the public light, I listened to countless podcasts and read a multitude of blog posts. There was one common theme of the people who walked the path of independent publishing before me: “you are going to make a lot of mistakes.”

The Cemetery
A Nine Devines Short Story

There is an introduction my wife likes to use when she wants a stranger’s complete attention: “My name is Jennifer Plum from St. Paul.” She first used this phrase to successfully sit three feet away from Prince during his iconic performance at the Dakota Jazz Club even though she arrived at the venue without a ticket for one of the most coveted shows in recent memory. While her name is indeed Jennifer Plum, she is neither from St. Paul nor does she live their now. To her defense, she has called the Capitol City her home at various points and has taught English in its Eastside neighborhood for the past twenty-five years.

When she evoked the phrase in the back seat of the car on our drive to Eau Claire for a book signing, my ears perked up because I knew she meant serious business.

Asks For Your Support

As we pass three months since the publication of The Nine Devines, it is clear that the stories and themes are resonating with readers. Several have asked how they can help with continuing to grow the audience. Here are two easy ways to do so:

  1. Continue to spread the word one reader at a time. We cannot tell you how many people have come up to us and said, "a friend (or relatively) told me about the Nine Devines . . ."
  2. Click the stars and/or write a review on Amazon. Some of you have already taken this step. Reviews are the way in which readers who are less familiar with the story or authors are willing to take a chance on a book. You did NOT have to purchase the book on Amazon to leave a review. Here are the steps:
    • Log on to your Amazon Account
    • Click on this link: https://a.co/d/edACmIA
    • Scroll down and click "review this product."
    • You will be directed to click the stars and leave a review.

The Nine Devines of Chippewa Falls: Available in Paperback, Hardcover, & eBook!

The true story of hope, perseverance, the unifying power of sport, & the unbreakable bonds of family.

“It will only be temporary.” This was the promise made to Erma Devine when her four-year old son, Dan, was sent away from his eight siblings in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin to live with his aunt and uncle in Proctor, Minnesota. He never returned home.

Though Dan Devine would become a household name as the Hall of Fame Football coach of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish & Green Bay Packers, his upbringing remained carefully guarded even to those closest to him. The impact of Dan’s childhood separation and the fate of his brothers and sisters left behind was destined to be lost to silence.

While Dan is on his deathbed, however, his grandson Darius experiences a vision. Dismissive of the event at first, Darius is forced to confront the vision’s meaning when Dan’s brother, Jerry “Lefty” Devine, unexpectedly appears in his life. Together, they must decide how deep they will explore the Devines’ often difficult past so they may forge a new path for the future.
